Vaccinations: Bring the Records

Key facts

  • ⛔ No medical advice, and no vaccine, age or dose is named here.
  • National schedules differ. Spain's is Spain's; yours was somewhere else's.
  • Spain's health system is run by the autonomous communities, so the practical handling is regional.
  • Bring the complete record, ideally with generic names and dates.
  • We make no claim about entry, residence or school requirements.

The practical issue is almost never whether you are vaccinated. It is whether anyone in Spain can tell — because national schedules differ, records do not travel in a standard format, and the moment it matters is usually a school enrolment or a first appointment.

Why this becomes a problem

Not because of a border. We state nothing about vaccination being required for entry to or residence in Spain.

Because of a desk. A school, a nursery, a first paediatric appointment — somewhere a professional needs to know what has already been given, and the only source is you.

If the record is in another language, in another format, or at home in a drawer, that is the problem, and it is entirely preventable.

What to bring

The complete history, not a summary. Dates and what was given.

Generic rather than brand names where you can get them. Brands differ between countries and a professional here may not recognise one.

A translation if your record is not in Spanish or English — and keep the original alongside it.

Digitise it. A photograph of every page, stored somewhere you can reach from a phone, has solved this problem for more people than any amount of planning.

What happens next is local

Spain's health service is administered by the autonomous communities, each with its own service and its own way of handling a new arrival with a foreign record. We describe no community's process.

The useful move is to ask early — at your first registration or appointment — rather than at the point where someone needs an answer immediately.

Where this sits

Getting into the system at all is the bigger task, and it comes first. Healthcare in Spain is how access works; moving to Spain with children is the wider version of this question.

If you are bringing an ongoing condition rather than a record, that is a different and more urgent question — pre-existing conditions.

What we will not do

⛔ We will not tell you what to have, when, or at what age. That is medical advice, it belongs to a clinician who knows your history, and a general guide is the wrong place for it.
