Student Visas for Doctoral Study in Spain

Key facts

  • A doctorate is an official higher-education title — offered by universities and by higher artistic-education centres.
  • Your authorisation's duration matches the official duration of your studies, not a standard twelve months.
  • Up to two extensions, each capped at one year.
  • A partner and minor children can accompany you, provided at least ninety days of your validity remain.
  • You can work automatically, employed or self-employed, with no further procedure.
  • You can move to residence and work at the end without a visa.
  • Títulos propios also qualify, but they carry extra conditions.

Doctoral study sits in the strongest position of any route in Spain's study rules, and most coverage never says so. A doctorate is an official higher-education qualification, which places it in the category that carries the longest authorisations, the right to be accompanied by a partner, automatic permission to work, and a route to residence and work at the end.

That classification is worth confirming before anything else, because everything below follows from it rather than from anything specific to research.

The classification, and why it matters

Higher education in this regulation means studies — university or not — leading to qualifications at the levels of Spain's Qualifications Framework for Higher Education. The Ministry's criteria then set out which centres may offer them and what they award: universities, whose official titles are Grado, Máster Universitario and Doctorado; and higher artistic-education centres, whose official titles include Doctorado as well.

So a doctoral programme at a Spanish university is in the primary study category. Not an adjacent one, not a research-specific one. Everything the category carries, it carries for you.

What the category gives you

An authorisation that matches your programme. The regulation provides that for higher education the duration of the stay coincides with the official duration of the studies. For a doctorate that is a multi-year authorisation rather than an annual renewal cycle.

Two extensions. Where an extension is needed, higher education allows up to two, each limited to one year. Extending a student stay in Spain covers the windows and what gets re-tested.

Family accompaniment. A spouse, registered partner or duly proven stable partner, and unmarried minor children, may apply for the period remaining on your authorisation — provided at least ninety calendar days remain when they apply. Bringing a spouse or partner on a Spanish student stay sets out the conditions, including what counts as a stable partnership.

Automatic permission to work. The authorisation permits work, employed or self-employed, automatically and without an additional procedure. For doctoral candidates holding teaching or research roles, that removes a step people often assume is required.

In-country filing. Higher education is one of the few categories that can be applied for from inside Spain if you are lawfully present and of full age. Switching to a student stay from inside Spain covers the timing, which is tighter than it looks.

And a route onward. Completing the qualification opens the move to residence and work without a visa, subject to the article's other conditions. From a student stay to residence and work has the detail.

If your programme is a título propio

Universities award both official titles and their own — títulos propios — and both are admissible for a study authorisation. But the criteria attach conditions to the second kind, because the category has been used loosely elsewhere.

The study plan must not be concordant with other titles or certificates, and the criteria single out professional certificates in particular. It must also not cause confusion with vocational qualifications at intermediate or higher grade by having similar content.

Where the file raises doubts about the nature of the title, the criteria say the authority may require further evidence — including, for a public university, the Social Council's act approving the title's establishment.

So if you are enrolling on a research or doctoral-adjacent programme that is a título propio rather than an official doctorate, ask the institution what it awards and on what basis. It remains a valid route; it is simply one where the paperwork can be examined more closely.

Keeping the authorisation over several years

A multi-year authorisation is checked along the way, not just at the start. Maintaining it requires enrolment in at least ninety per cent of the credits, and the criteria say compliance with the means and insurance conditions can be evidenced at the start of each course — noting that the initial examination extends in any case to the first year of the authorisation's validity.

For doctoral candidates that is the practical rhythm to plan for: an annual evidencing step inside a multi-year permission.

Health cover over a multi-year stay

This is where a doctoral authorisation differs from a one-year course in a way that costs money if ignored. The study route's insurance condition requires cover valid for the intended duration of the stay — and your stay may be three or four years, not twelve months.

Settle one thing first, though. If you are working in the terms the regulation permits — which for higher education is automatic — and are registered in the corresponding Social Security regime, the insurance requirement is treated as satisfied by that registration. Many doctoral candidates with teaching or research contracts are in exactly that position and do not need a private policy for this purpose at all.

If that does not apply to you, the thing to check is whether the cover runs across the period you are applying for rather than a convenient year. Health insurance for a Spanish student visa sets out the standard, including the public register you can check an insurer against yourself.

Cover for a student visa

Health cover is one of the requirement categories for the study route.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PhD covered by the Spanish student visa route?

Yes. A doctorate is an official higher-education title, which places it in the main study category.

How long will my authorisation last?

For higher education the duration coincides with the official duration of the studies, so a multi-year programme gets a multi-year authorisation rather than annual renewals.

Can I work during my doctorate?

Yes, automatically, employed or self-employed, with no additional procedure.

Can my partner come with me?

Yes, provided at least ninety calendar days remain on your authorisation when they apply.

What if my programme is a título propio rather than an official doctorate?

Still admissible, but the criteria impose conditions on títulos propios and the authority may ask for more evidence about the title itself.

Do I need private health insurance for a four-year stay?

Not if you are working in the permitted terms and registered with Social Security — the requirement is then treated as met by that registration. If you are not, the cover has to be valid for the period you are applying for.
