Sponsorship for a Spanish Student Stay
Key facts
- Family funding is expressly among the named sources of acceptable means.
- The list is non-exhaustive and the assessment is individualised.
- There is no universal sponsor declaration required for money generally.
- Where a relative owns your accommodation, three documents are named — and required cumulatively.
- That relative must be within the second degree of relationship.
- A sponsor's wealth is not the point — availability of the funds to you is.
Being funded by someone else is normal and the rules say so. When Spain's criteria list the ways a student may evidence sufficient resources, means coming from family members appear in the list alongside your own funds, subsidies, aid and scholarships. Family funding is contemplated, not merely tolerated.
What the rules do not do is prescribe a universal sponsorship form. There is one place where specific documents are named, and it concerns accommodation rather than money in general. Knowing that distinction keeps you from either over-preparing the wrong document or under-preparing the right one.
Who can sponsor you
The criteria name family members, and they frame the list as examples rather than limits — it is expressly non-exhaustive, with an individualised analysis in each case.
So the question is not whether your funder is on an approved list. It is whether the evidence establishes that resources exist, that they are available to support you, and that they cover the period you are applying for.
Which means a sponsor's own bank statement, standing alone, is doing less work than people expect. It establishes that someone has money. It does not by itself establish that the money is available to you for your maintenance in Spain. Closing that gap is the sponsor's real job.
What a funder should actually put forward
Since no universal form is prescribed, the standard is whether the material helps the individualised analysis. In substance that means being legible about four things:
Who is committing. Identified, with their relationship to you where that is the basis.
What they are committing to. Support for your maintenance, rather than a general expression of goodwill.
Over what period. Matched to the stay you are applying for, not open-ended.
And on what underlying evidence. The commitment and the proof should travel together — the letter explains the position, the documents establish it.
The amount that has to be reached is set out on our main student visa page, which governs that figure for this estate. We do not restate money figures across pages. The Spanish student visa has it.
The one case where documents are named
If a relative owns the accommodation you will live in, the criteria stop being open and become specific.
Accommodation is treated as guaranteed in advance where its ownership belongs to a relative up to the second degree, provided three things are evidenced cumulatively:
The relationship. Proof of the family tie.
The title by which the relative occupies the property. The basis on which they hold it, not merely the fact that they live there.
A responsible declaration signed by that relative, expressly committing that you will have the accommodation available for the whole period of the authorisation's validity.
This is the closest thing to a prescribed sponsor document in the whole means test — and its subject is accommodation. It is not a general funding declaration and it should not be presented as one. How the accommodation side fits into the money requirement is set out on proving accommodation for a Spanish student stay.
What sponsorship does not do
It does not change the other conditions. Enrolment, the criminal-record checks and health insurance are unaffected by who is paying. Health insurance for a Spanish student visa covers that condition, including when it is satisfied by Social Security registration instead of a policy.
It does not create an immigration status for the sponsor. Funding a student gives the funder nothing in Spain.
And it does not license an overstatement. Inexact allegations are a ground for refusal in their own right, so a sponsor letter claiming more than the evidence supports is a risk rather than a cushion. Why a Spanish student application is refused sets out that ground.
If you are funding yourself, or partly
Mixed sources are normal and the criteria accommodate them — own means, family means, a scholarship and a firm job offer can sit alongside each other, because the list is non-exhaustive and the analysis is individualised. What matters is the total position and its evidence, not the purity of a single source. The form side of that is covered on the financial guarantee letter.
What this page will not tell you
The required amount. Governed on our main student visa page.
A sponsor letter template. None is prescribed for money generally, and publishing one as though it were official would misrepresent its standing.
Whether a particular sponsor's documents will satisfy a particular post. The analysis is individualised and practice varies.
Frequently asked questions
Can my parents sponsor my Spanish student visa?
Yes. Means coming from family members are expressly among the named acceptable sources.
Is there an official sponsorship letter?
Not for money generally. The criteria require any means of proof with an individualised analysis. The one place specific documents are named concerns accommodation owned by a relative.
What does a sponsor need to show?
In substance: who is committing, to what, over what period, and the underlying evidence — the key point being that the funds are available to you, not merely that they exist.
My aunt owns the flat I will live in — what is needed?
Where the relative is within the second degree, three documents cumulatively: proof of the relationship, proof of the title by which they occupy the property, and a responsible declaration signed by them covering the authorisation's validity.
Can I combine a scholarship, my own savings and family support?
Yes. The list of sources is non-exhaustive and the assessment looks at the overall position.
Does sponsoring a student give the sponsor any rights in Spain?
No.
