Student Visas for a Master's in Spain

Key facts

 • Máster Universitario is an official title and sits in higher education.
 • Máster de Formación Profesional is expressly included in the same category.
 • A título propio is admissible, but its study plan must not duplicate or be confusable with other qualifications.
 • Your authorisation's duration matches the official duration of the studies — so a one-year Master's gets a one-year authorisation.
 • Up to two extensions, each capped at a year.
 • A partner can accompany you, and you can work automatically.
 • You can apply from inside Spain if you are lawfully present and of full age.

Before anything else, establish which kind of Master's you are enrolling on, because Spain uses the word for three different awards and the immigration consequences are not identical.

Two of them are higher education by name. A Máster Universitario is an official university title. A Máster de Formación Profesional is expressly written into the higher-education definition. The third — a university's own título propio — is admissible too, but it comes with conditions the other two do not have.

Get that right and the rest is generous: the higher-education category carries the strongest terms in the whole study chapter.

Which Master's is yours

A Máster Universitario is one of the official titles universities award, alongside the Grado and the Doctorado. It is squarely inside the higher-education category.

A Máster de Formación Profesional is named in the regulation's own definition of higher education, by reference to its own Royal Decree. This surprises people who assume vocational qualifications sit outside higher education — for FP Másteres they do not.

A título propio is an award the university creates itself rather than one of the official titles. It is admissible for a study authorisation — the criteria say so explicitly — but it carries two conditions:

Its study plan must not be concordant with other titles or certificates, and the criteria single out professional certificates in particular.

And it must not cause confusion with vocational qualifications at intermediate or higher grade by having similar content.

Where the file raises doubts about the nature of the title, the authority may require further evidence — including, for a public university, the Social Council's act approving the title's establishment.

So the practical question to put to your institution is simple: what exactly does this programme award, and on what basis? Student visas for doctoral study in Spain goes further into the título propio conditions, which apply the same way at doctoral level.

What the category gives you

Your authorisation matches your programme, not a standard year. The regulation provides that for higher education the duration coincides with the official duration of the studies — so a one-year Master's produces a one-year authorisation and a two-year Master's a two-year one. That is different from a route that grants twelve months and makes you renew.

Two extensions are available, each limited to a year, which matters if your programme runs long or you continue into further study in the same category. Extending a student stay in Spain covers the windows and what gets re-tested.

A partner or minor children can accompany you, provided at least ninety calendar days remain on your authorisation when they apply — a condition worth watching on a one-year Master's, where the window closes sooner than people expect. Bringing a spouse or partner on a Spanish student stay has the detail.

You can work, employed or self-employed, automatically and without a further procedure.

You can apply from inside Spain if you are lawfully present and of full age — one of only a few categories that can. Switching to a student stay from inside Spain covers the timing, which is tighter than it looks.

And you can move into residence and work afterwards without a visa, on obtaining the qualification. From a student stay to residence and work sets out the conditions.

The one-year Master's problem

Short programmes compress every deadline, and that is the Master's-specific risk.

Family accompaniment needs ninety days of remaining validity. On a twelve-month authorisation, leaving that application until you have settled in can put you past the line.

Your enrolment has to match the authorised studies literally, and on a programme that starts late or changes modules that is worth checking rather than assuming. Proving enrolment for a Spanish student visa covers what the matrícula has to establish.

And maintenance is tested at the start of each course, with enrolment in at least ninety per cent of the credits — which on a one-year programme means the initial examination effectively covers the whole thing.

Insurance

Settle one question before buying anything. If you will be working during your Master's in the terms the regulation permits — and for higher education that permission is automatic — and you are registered in the corresponding Social Security regime, the insurance requirement is treated as satisfied by that registration. Many Master's students with assistantships or part-time work are in exactly that position.

If that does not apply to you, the study standard does: an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, benefits similar to the National Health System's basic common portfolio, and validity across your intended stay — with the Ministry's criteria adding the DGSFP register requirement and cover free of copayments, reimbursements and waiting periods. Health insurance for a Spanish student visa sets it out.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Master's qualify for a Spanish student visa?

Yes. A Máster Universitario is an official higher-education title, and a Máster de Formación Profesional is expressly included in the same category.

What if my programme is a título propio?

Still admissible, but its study plan must not duplicate or be confusable with other qualifications, and the authority may ask for evidence about the title itself.

How long will my authorisation last?

For higher education the duration coincides with the official duration of the studies, so a one-year Master's gets a one-year authorisation.

Can my partner come?

Yes, provided at least ninety calendar days remain on your authorisation when they apply — worth acting on early with a one-year programme.

Can I work during a Master's?

Yes, automatically, employed or self-employed. And if you register with Social Security, the insurance requirement is treated as met by that registration.

Can I apply from inside Spain?

Yes, if you are lawfully present and of full age. Higher education is one of the few categories that allows it.
