The Documents: Where the Weeks Actually Go
Key facts
- No document list appears here. It is route-specific — requirements.
- Four categories behave differently: identity, status, financial, and health.
- Legalisation and translation are separate steps, each with its own queue.
- Validity windows are the hidden deadline. Too early is as bad as too late.
- A sworn translation is not the same as a translation.
Almost nobody is delayed because they did not know which documents were needed. They are delayed because a document had to be legalised, then translated, then was out of date by the time the appointment came round.
The four categories
Identity — passport and photographs. Usually the simplest, occasionally the one with a validity problem nobody checked.
Status — documents proving a relationship, a qualification, a civil status or a clean record. These are the slow ones, because they come from another state's bureaucracy and often need legalising.
Financial — evidence of means. Its own page, because its traps are specific: bank statements for a Spanish visa.
Health — a medical certificate and, separately, insurance. The medical certificate · the insurance certificate.
The three-step problem
Obtain. Legalise. Translate. Each is a separate process, they run in that order, and each has a queue.
People plan for the first and are surprised by the other two. A document that took a week to obtain can take another month to become usable, and no amount of urgency compresses the queue.
What is worth knowing is that the step exists and that it is sequential.
Translation is not one thing
A translation converts the text.
A sworn translation is produced by a translator with official standing for the purpose, costs more, and takes longer.
Submitting the wrong one means doing it again, usually after an appointment you then have to rebook. Ask which is required before commissioning either. Does the certificate need to be bilingual? is the same question for the insurance document.
The validity trap
Some supporting documents are only accepted if issued recently.
That creates a window: obtain too early and it expires before you submit; obtain too late and you miss the appointment you have already booked.
The practical move is to work backwards from the appointment date rather than forwards from today, and to obtain the short-validity documents last.
How the application works is the sequencing page.
What to keep
A complete copy of exactly what you submitted, in the version you submitted it.
If anything goes wrong, that file is the first thing needed and the hardest thing to reconstruct from memory. If the application is refused.
