How Long Does It Take? The Honest Answer
Key facts
- ⛔ No timeframe appears on this page. Deliberately.
- Most of the elapsed time is usually not the decision.
- The appointment queue is outside your control. Plan around it.
- Document preparation is the longest controllable stretch.
- A request for more information restarts your personal clock, whatever the official one says.
Nobody can tell you, and the people who sound most confident are usually quoting one person's experience at one post two years ago.
What is useful is knowing what the timeline is made of, because most of it is not the decision — it is the queue before it and the paperwork before that.
The four stretches
Preparing documents. Obtain, legalise, translate. This is the longest part you control, and it is sequential. The documents and their traps.
Waiting for an appointment. Availability varies by post and by season and is not something you influence.
The assessment itself. The part everyone means by "processing time", and often not the biggest.
Responding to a request for more information. The silent killer: a single query can add more than the original wait, and the clock that matters to you is not the one anyone publishes.
Why published figures mislead
They describe the decision, not your experience. If you spent eleven weeks getting a document legalised, no official figure includes that.
They are averages over posts with very different volumes.
They move. Seasonal pressure is real.
, and we would treat any article that does without naming a post and a date as unreliable.
How to plan without a number
Work backwards from when you need to be in Spain, not forwards from today.
Put the long-validity documents first and the short-validity ones last. Statements, certificates and anything with a freshness requirement are obtained near the end. How the application works.
Assume one round of questions. If it does not happen, you are early.
Do not commit money to a date you do not control. Non-refundable flights, a signed long lease and a shipping date booked around an expected decision are the three expensive ways this goes wrong. Renting before you move is the housing version of that caution.
The thing that is genuinely in your hands
The quality of the file. The commonest avoidable delay is a request for something that should have been there, and it is the one variable you fully control. Spanish visa requirements.
